Jobs with a Future

Life Skills Education (LSE) recently published a new instructional booklet entitled Green Jobs, Careers with a Future. This new title is designed to provide job seekers with concise guidance on how to target and prepare for green careers.

The term ‘green jobs’ covers a wide range of different work fields and clusters but, using a simple 18 page format, the booklet gives readers an overview that is easy to understand and follow. A green career path is broken down into two main sectors: alternative energy and conservation, with accompanying descriptions of the skills and training required.

Alternative energy involves areas such as solar, wind, water, geothermal. Businesses aligned here include manufacturers, distributors, solar panel installation, and wind turbine service companies. Contractors, developers, installers and the trades are all needed to support these areas.

Conservation is the protection of resources that we already have, especially ones we are running out of including oil & gas. Some of the industries and fields involved with conservation include: building design and construction, carpenters, insulation installers, masons, roofers and many more.

There’s a lot of good news to report on green jobs: workers will be needed at all different skill levels, many will have advancement opportunities, and jobseekers will often find that the skills developed in their former jobs transfer well into a green career path.

Also the need and demand for careers in these areas will continue to increase. And people can feel good about being part of the solution to a “green economy” that helps us operate in cleaner, more energy efficient ways.

What else is so great about green jobs?  Diversity of jobs; cutting-edge developments; state and Federal support; an industry that’s focused on the future.

The Life Skills Education booklets address the need for portable job-search assistance that’s easy to follow and understand. The format is attractive and practical, with helpful tips and guidelines. These features make them helpful in both career centers, as well as take home resources.

One Stop Career Centers and WIBs use Life Skills Education booklets for their WIA, Dislocated Workers, TANF customers, often personalizing them with a logo and message to help promote their services . The booklets are popular for teaching job readiness skills such as planning a job search, writing a résumé, preparing for an interview, and succeeding in the workplace.
